| Background: | In Sweden and Finland Midsommar is the most important (and craziest) public holiday of the whole year, yet almost unknown in Germany. It is the longest day of the year so the sun doesn’t set at all in the north of Scandinavia. Everybody dances in traditional clothing around the midsommer tree, a large wooden cross decorated with flowers by the women. Also a huge “kokku”-fire will be burnt to get rid of evil demons. A collective uncontrolled booze-up follows during a night when heroes are conceived for it is the night when monks and witches of the Celtics used to gather for the yearly mass orgie. |
